Raids by the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin have resulted in an increasing number of casualties since they started on Tuesday and have now entered their third day. Eight Palestinians have been killed in the Jenin refugee camp alone since Tuesday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement. Israeli forces have killed 58 people, including children, in Jenin alone since October 7. Kamal Abu al-Rub, Jenin’s acting governor, said more Israeli forces were heading towards the city and the camp, in what is the military’s 15th incursion into this area since October 7. Abu…
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell says the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been so good to him that he will play in the lucrative T20 cricket competition until he “can’t walk any more”. The IPL has been the perfect platform to showcase Maxwell’s explosive batting and the 35-year-old is one of the four foreign recruits Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have retained for next season. After making his debut in the competition with Delhi Daredevils in 2012, Maxwell commanded the top price at the players’ auction the following year, with Mumbai Indians shelling out $1m for his services. After a three-year stint in Punjab…
Rescue workers in Zambia have pulled out the first survivor of a December 1 landslide that inundated an open-pit copper mine and trapped at least 25 people working there, the disaster management unit said on Wednesday. The rescue team also retrieved one body which had yet to be identified, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit said in a statement posted on Facebook. “A 49-year-old man has been rescued from the collapsed mine slug dump site in Chingola after being trapped with several other miners,” it said, adding that he was being treated in hospital. Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema said on…
Tehran, Iran – Iran has sent a capsule carrying animals into space as it boosts its Western-contested space programme in preparation for human missions. State media on Wednesday released a clip of the launch of an Iranian-made rocket carrying the capsule, which they said was successfully sent 130km (80 miles) into orbit. The Salman rocket carried an “all indigenous” capsule weighing 500kg (1,100 pounds), which is reportedly the heaviest biological capsule ever successfully carried in the history of the Iranian space programme. Neither state media nor Telecommunications Minister Isa Zarepour, who confirmed the news, said what kind of animals were in…
The two remaining members of West Africa’s G5 Sahel alliance on Wednesday said they were paving the way to dissolving the anti-rebel grouping after the other three founding countries left. In a joint statement, Chad and Mauritania said they “take note and respect the sovereign decision” of Burkina Faso and Niger to leave the alliance, following in the footsteps of Mali, which quit in 2022. They “will implement all necessary measures in accordance with the G5 founding convention, notably Article 20,” the statement added. The article says the alliance can be dissolved at the request of at least three member…
The Oscar-winning actor made a surprise appearance at the Critics Choice Association‘s Celebration of Cinema and Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements, where he received the Vanguard Award for his performance in the film, “The Burial.” It was his first major public event since he was hospitalized in Atlanta in April with an undisclosed medical condition. Foxx received a standing ovation when he took the stage. “I’ve been through something. I’ve been through some things. You know, it’s crazy, I couldn’t do that six months ago. I couldn’t actually walk,” Foxx said, pausing as he became overwhelmed with emotion. “I’m not a…
India’s space agency Isro says it has successfully brought back into Earth’s orbit a part of the rocket that carried its historic Moon mission recently. The “propulsion module” had detached from the Vikram lander after ferrying it close to the Moon where it finally touched down on 23 August. After a series of complex manoeuvres, the module re-entered Earth’s orbit. The experiment is significant for Isro’s plans to bring back manned missions in the future. The module will continue to keep an eye on Earth from its new perch, Isro said. When Chandrayaan-3’s lander, carrying the Pragyaan rover in its…
Cyclone Michaung has made landfall in southern India, after earlier torrential rains sent tall waves crashing into coastal towns, submerging roads and killing at least nine people, including a child. The “severe cyclonic storm”, packing winds up to 100kmph (62mph), reached the shores of Andhra Pradesh state near the town of Bapatla, shortly after noon on Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Department said. Parts of the state are expected to be pelted with more than 200mm (8 inches) of rain over the next 24 hours, the weather office said earlier. “We are facing the worst storm in recent memory,” neighbouring Tamil…
Taipei, Taiwan – In October 2019, the United States announced that the Peace Corps, the storied volunteer programme established by John F Kennedy, would return to the Solomon Islands after a two-decade absence. The announcement was the latest in a flurry of moves by Washington to counter China’s growing presence in Pacific island nations like the Solomon Islands, a sparsely populated but strategically located archipelago that lies about 2,000km northeast of Australia. More than four years later, the Peace Corps has yet to arrive, even as volunteers have returned to other nations in the Pacific such as Fiji, Tonga and Samoa…
The Republican party’s candidates for the 2024 United States presidential election will take the stage for a fourth debate on Wednesday after tense exchanges on immigration, abortion and Israel’s war on Gaza in the previous debates. The debates are a chance for the candidates to contest each other’s views before primary election polls determine the face of the Republican party in the US presidential elections scheduled for January 15, 2024. Four Republican candidates are vying to be the party’s nominees, with former US President Donald Trump remaining the frontrunner as per the opinion polls. Trump, who has a 40 percentage points lead in the…
